Each guitar has its own sound, depending on the box and pick up. I mostly use maple for the necks, walnut, rosewood, or red oak for the fingerboards, Padron boxes when I can, and Humbucker style pickups (though I've been known to use Soapbar or Lipstick pickups from time to time) because I've found those combinations to produce the best tones overall. Some sound better played acoustically with a slide in that Delta Blues style, and others flat out growl plugged in to an amp for rock or that Chicago blues style. No matter plugged or unplugged though, they all just sound better with a slide.

This is really a labor of love for me. I stumbled on cigar box guitars on the web and down the rabbit hole I went. As a blues lover, I was instantly drawn to the history of these instruments. The consensus is that they originated in the south as alternatives to unaffordable store bought guitars. Usually built from whatever was available at the time (cigar boxes, oil cans, broom handles, fence wire, you name it), they came in different string configurations and are best associated with the Mississippi Delta style of slide blues playing. In order to honor the history of these instruments, I build them with hand tools...the only power tool I use is an electric drill. Each guitar has its own personality and distinct tone, and most are on the rustic side. If you want to hear how these instruments sound in the hands of folks who know and appreciate them, ask Momma Google about Justin Johnson and Mike Snowden...wow, now that's what keeps me practicing.
You slap a slide on a resonator and watch the hair on my neck stand straight up! It's kinda like the Good Ol Grateful Dead for me, it's music that gets down deep into my soul...It's music you feel, not just listen to. It's kinda like the Good Ol Grateful Dead for me, it's music that gets down deep into my soul...It's music you feel, not just listen to. From the blues to good old rock and roll, these cigar box guitars just get it. Plus, they are really fun to play and exceptionally easy to learn if you're just starting out on the guitar. My CBG's provide a real down home soulful experience...they aren't meant to replace what you have, but to enhance your instrument collection.
Can't play,
I ain't pretty, and my legs are thin.
But don't ask me what I think of you, might not give the answer that you want me to. Oh well.
